Stuff People Spew about Catholicism...

"I know Catholicism is about a lot of rules...."

My youngest son's school librarian Wendy said this to me the other day - and honestly, it took me by surprise.  So much so that I didn't actually respond other than to stammer a bit and laugh.  Awkward really.

Here's why Wendy said it:  my son didn't return his library books on the due date.  She, being the librarian, gave him the "over-the-glasses" stare and asked him why.  He told her, "Because we're Catholic."

Wendy, of course, thought this was very funny and came out to tell me.  The books got left at home in a way because we are becoming Catholic: the boys go to "prep" or catechism the night before their library day and we get home a little later than the boys are used to.  So everything gets behind...

That's when Wendy laughed saying, "I know Catholicism is about a lot of rules, but I am pretty sure leaving your library books at home is not one of them...." I froze in a mental fog.

That Wendy and so many define Catholicism as a set of rules is so tragic really.  I love my faith.  I love this discovery we are on - enjoying the riches of the church that Christ himself founded on St. Peter's faith.  For me, this journey has taken me into the lives of the saints with their gentle kindness bringing countless people back to a deep understanding of our saviour and His love of His own church.  Their stories should be hung from every wall, pillar, post and beam in every church building as a reminder of the kind of sweetness that we should treat each other and ourselves with.

Yet, I do know where Wendy gets her thoughts from.  I spent an evening about a month ago talking about our homecoming to the Church with an older Catholic woman, Isobel, who gave me some practical pointers on participating in the mass: you bend only your right knee when you go into a pew - not your left knee, you don't chew the eucharist, you let it melt in your mouth: that is the body of Christ after all!  When I asked her some questions about that, she simply said, "you don't know what the nuns were like."

Yet, this is the Year of Faith!  Pope Benedict has called us all to cling to our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.  Pope Benedict knows well, the hurts of years past in the Catholic church and still considers the spiritual wealth of "the Church ... clasping sinners to its bosom, at once holy and always in need of purification, follow[ing] constantly the path of penance and renewal" (from the Apostolic Letter 'Porta Fidei' by Pope Benedict).

We must always be responsible for our own faith too.  We must always question whether or not we are hearing opinion or doctrine.  We ourselves must always be careful that even though our hearts want the best for the people we love - we must not lead them there with pushing and shoving, anger and judgement.  The sweetness of the love of God the Father, Christ the Son and the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit will draw people home.  Certainly, we are all called to invite, but it is God who leads.

«Je sais que le catholicisme est sur un grand nombre de règles ...."L'école de mon fils cadet bibliothécaire Wendy m'a dit cela l'autre jour - et honnêtement, ça m'a pris par surprise. Tant et si bien que je n'ai pas fait autre que de répondre à balbutier un peu et rire. Awkward vraiment.

Voici pourquoi Wendy a dit: mon fils ne retourne pas ses livres de bibliothèque à la date d'échéance. Elle, qui est le bibliothécaire, lui a donné le "over-the-verres" regard et lui demanda pourquoi. Il lui a dit, «Parce que nous sommes catholiques."


Wendy, bien sûr, pensé que c'était très drôle et est venu me le dire. Les livres se sont laissés à la maison d'une manière parce que nous sommes devenir catholique: les garçons vont à l'"prep" ou le catéchisme, la veille de leur journée bibliothèque et on rentre un peu plus tard que les garçons sont habitués. Donc, tout se met derrière ...

C'est alors que Wendy se mit à rire en disant: «Je sais que le catholicisme est sur un grand nombre de règles, mais je suis assez sûr de laisser vos livres de bibliothèque à la maison n'est pas l'un d'eux ...." J'ai gelé dans un brouillard mental.

Que Wendy et tant de définir le catholicisme comme un ensemble de règles est vraiment tragique. J'aime ma foi. J'aime cette découverte que nous sommes sur - profiter des richesses de l'Église que le Christ lui-même fondé sur la foi de saint Pierre. Pour moi, ce périple m'a conduit dans les vies des saints avec leur gentillesse douce apportant d'innombrables personnes de retour à une compréhension profonde de notre Sauveur et son amour de sa propre église. Leurs histoires doivent être suspendus de chaque mur, un pilier, poteaux et poutres dans chaque bâtiment de l'église comme un rappel de la sorte de douceur que nous devrions traiter les uns les autres et nous-mêmes avec.

Pourtant, je ne sais pas où Wendy obtient ses pensées à partir. J'ai passé une soirée il ya un mois à parler de notre retour à l'Eglise avec une femme plus âgée catholique, Isobel, qui m'a donné quelques conseils pratiques concernant la participation à la masse: ne vous pliez votre genou droit quand vous allez dans un banc - pas votre genou gauche, vous ne mâchez pas l'eucharistie, vous le laisser fondre dans la bouche: c'est le corps du Christ après tout! Quand je lui ai posé quelques questions à ce sujet, elle a simplement dit, "vous ne savez pas ce que les religieuses étaient comme."

Pourtant, c'est l'Année de la Foi! Le pape Benoît nous a tous appelés à s'accrocher à notre foi dans le Seigneur Jésus-Christ. Le pape Benoît sait bien, le mal d'années passées dans l'église catholique et se considère toujours la richesse spirituelle de «l'Eglise ... enferme des pécheurs dans son sein, à la fois sainte et appelée à se purifier, suivez [ant] en permanence le chemin de pénitence et de renouvellement "(de la Lettre apostolique« Porta Fidei »par le pape Benoît).

Nous devons toujours être responsables de notre propre foi aussi. Nous devons toujours nous demander si oui ou non nous entendons opinion ou une doctrine. Nous nous devons toujours veiller à ce que, même si nos coeurs veulent le meilleur pour les gens que nous aimons - nous ne devons pas les y conduire avec bousculades, la colère et le jugement. La douceur de l'amour de Dieu le Père, le Christ, le Fils et le pouvoir qui change la vie de l'Esprit Saint attirer les gens à la maison. Certes, nous sommes tous appelés à inviter, mais c'est Dieu qui dirige.

 "Ich weiß, Katholizismus ist über eine Menge von Regeln ...."Mein jüngster Sohn Schulbibliothekar Wendy sagte mir dies den anderen Tag - und ehrlich, es hat mich überrascht. So sehr, dass ich nicht wirklich beantworten außer ein bisschen und lachen stammeln zu können. Peinlich wirklich.

Hier ist, warum Wendy sagte es: mein Sohn kam nicht wieder seine Bücher aus der Bibliothek am Fälligkeitstag. Sie, dass der Bibliothekar, gab ihm die "over-the-Brille" Blick und fragte ihn, warum. Er sagte ihr: "Weil wir Katholiken sind."

Wendy, natürlich dachte, das war sehr lustig und kam zu mir sagen. Die Bücher wurden zu Hause in einer Art und Weise verlassen, weil wir immer katholisch sind: die Jungs gehen "Prep" oder Katechismus der Nacht vor ihrer Bibliothek Tag und wir nach Hause kommen ein wenig später als die Jungs gewohnt sind. So wird alles hinter sich ...

Das ist, wenn Wendy lachte und sagte: "Ich weiß, Katholizismus ist über eine Menge von Regeln, aber ich bin mir ziemlich sicher Verlassen Ihrer Bücher aus der Bibliothek zu Hause ist nicht einer von ihnen ...." Ich erstarrte in einer psychiatrischen Nebel.

Dass Wendy und so viele definieren Katholizismus als eine Reihe von Regeln so tragisch wirklich. Ich liebe meinen Glauben. Ich liebe diese Entdeckung sind wir auf - genießen die Reichtümer der Kirche, dass Christus sich auf St. Peter Glauben gegründet. Für mich war diese Reise mich in den Leben der Heiligen aufgenommen mit ihrer sanften Güte bringen unzählige Menschen wieder zu einem tiefen Verständnis unseres Erlösers und seine Liebe zu seinem eigenen Kirche. Ihre Geschichten sollten von jeder Wand, Pfeiler, Pfosten-Riegel in jedem Kirchengebäude als Erinnerung an die Art von Süße aufgehängt werden, dass wir miteinander umgehen und uns mit.

Dennoch weiß ich, wo Wendy bekommt ihre Gedanken aus. Ich verbrachte einen Abend vor etwa einem Monat sprechen unsere Heimkehr der Kirche mit einer älteren katholischen Frau, Isobel, die mir einige praktische Hinweise zur Teilnahme an der Masse: Sie beugen nur das rechte Knie, wenn Sie in einer Kirchenbank zu gehen - nicht Ihre linken Knie, die Sie nicht kauen die Eucharistie, lassen Sie es auf der Zunge zergehen: Das ist der Leib Christi, nachdem alle! Als ich sie fragte einige Fragen über das, sie sagte einfach: "Sie wissen nicht, was die Nonnen waren wie."

Doch ist dies das Jahr des Glaubens! Papst Benedikt hat uns alle aufgerufen, unseren Glauben an den Herrn Jesus Christus zu klammern. Papst Benedikt gut kennt, die Verletzungen der vergangenen Jahre in der katholischen Kirche und noch hält die spirituellen Reichtum "der Kirche ... umklammerte Sünder in ihren Schoß, zugleich heilig und stets der Reinigung bedürftig, folgen Sie [ing] immer den Pfad der Buße und Erneuerung "(aus dem Apostolischen Schreiben" Porta Fidei "von Papst Benedikt).

Wir müssen immer die Verantwortung für unseren eigenen Glauben zu. Wir müssen uns immer fragen, ob wir nicht hören Meinung oder Lehre. Wir selbst müssen immer vorsichtig sein, dass, obwohl unsere Herzen das Beste für die Menschen, die wir lieben wollen - wir dürfen nicht dazu führen sie dort mit Gedränge, Zorn und Gericht. Die Süße der Liebe Gottes, des Vaters, Christus, der Sohn und die lebensverändernde Kraft des Heiligen Geistes wird ziehen die Menschen nach Hause. Sicherlich sind wir alle aufgerufen, zu laden, aber es ist Gott, der führt.

 "So che il cattolicesimo è di un sacco di regole ...."Il mio figlio più giovane di scuola bibliotecario Wendy ha detto questo a me l'altro giorno - e, onestamente, mi ha colto di sorpresa. Tanto che non ho effettivamente rispondere altro che balbettare un po 'e ridere. Awkward davvero.

Ecco perché Wendy ha detto: mio figlio non ha restituito i suoi libri della biblioteca alla data di scadenza. Lei, essendo il bibliotecario, gli ha dato il "over-the-occhiali" sguardo e gli ha chiesto perché. Lui le disse: "Perché siamo cattolici".

Wendy, naturalmente, pensato che questo era molto divertente ed è venuto fuori a dirmi. I libri ha lasciato a casa in un modo perché stiamo diventando cattolico: i ragazzi vanno a "preparazione" o catechismo la notte prima la giornata biblioteca e torniamo a casa un po 'più tardi i ragazzi sono abituati. Quindi, tutto ciò che si mette dietro ...

Questo è quando Wendy rideva dicendo: "So che il cattolicesimo è di circa un sacco di regole, ma sono abbastanza sicuro che lasciare i vostri libri della biblioteca a casa non è uno di loro ...." Mi bloccai in una nebbia mentale.

Che Wendy e tanti definiscono il cattolicesimo come un insieme di regole è così tragica realtà. Io amo la mia fede. Amo questa scoperta siamo sulla - godere le ricchezze della chiesa che Cristo stesso ha fondato sulla fede di San Pietro. Per me, questo viaggio mi ha portato nella vita dei santi con la loro gentilezza delicata portando innumerevoli persone tornare a una profonda comprensione del nostro salvatore e il suo amore per la sua chiesa. Le loro storie devono essere appesi da ogni, parete pilastro, post e fascio in ogni edificio della chiesa come un promemoria del tipo di dolcezza che dovremmo trattare gli altri e con noi stessi.

Eppure, io so dove Wendy ottiene i suoi pensieri da. Ho passato una serata circa un mese fa, parlando del nostro ritorno a casa alla Chiesa con una donna più anziana cattolica, Isobel, che mi ha dato alcune indicazioni pratiche sulla partecipazione in massa: si piega il ginocchio destro solo quando si va in un banco - non è il tuo ginocchio sinistro, non si mastica l'eucaristia, si lascia sciogliere in bocca: questo è il corpo di Cristo, dopo tutto! Quando le ho chiesto alcune domande su questo, ha semplicemente detto: "tu non sai quello che le suore erano come."

Eppure, questo è l'Anno della Fede! Papa Benedetto XVI ci ha chiamati tutti ad aderire alla nostra fede nel Signore Gesù Cristo. Papa Benedetto sa bene, le ferite degli anni passati nella chiesa cattolica e continua a ritenere la ricchezza spirituale della "Chiesa ... stringendo i peccatori nel suo seno, santa insieme e sempre bisognosa di purificazione, seguire [ing] costantemente il percorso della penitenza e del rinnovamento "(dalla Lettera apostolica 'Porta Fidei' da Papa Benedetto).

Dobbiamo sempre essere responsabile per la nostra fede anche. Dobbiamo sempre mettere in discussione se non abbiamo sentito opinione o dottrina. Noi stessi dobbiamo sempre stare attenti che anche se il nostro cuore desidera il meglio per le persone che amiamo - non dobbiamo portare lì con spintoni, rabbia e giudizio. La dolcezza dell'amore di Dio Padre, Cristo, il Figlio e la potenza cambia la vita dello Spirito Santo attirerà le persone a casa. Certo, siamo tutti chiamati a invitare, ma è Dio che guida.
